If you’re not into gaming you may be wondering what Fortnite is; allow me to break it down for you. Fortnite is in fact NOT a period of two weeks (who would’ve thought?), it is a battle royale game, this means a large number of players pitted against each other and the last one surviving wins. The CARNAGE!
Each game has 100 players landing on an island after jumping off a flying bus and equipped with only pickaxes. They then have to find weapons and other items in order to eliminate the other players.
One of the unique aspects of the game is that it allows one to scavenge materials and build forts; get it now? FORTnite. These structures help protect the players from weapons fire and provide vantage points against opponents.
Some individuals are absolute wizards at this game, chief among them being 16-year-old Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf who won a whopping 3 million-dollar first place prize at the recently concluded Fortnite World Cup. More than 2 million people watched the best players in the world battle it out.
It would be an understatement to say that the game is popular. This free to play video game developed by Epic Games (who also own the engine used to create it) has generated billions of dollars and become a craze in the gaming community. The Fortnite world cup is the largest Fortnite Tournament ever held. It is estimated that over a million people watched the Finals on the video gaming streaming site Twitch. YouTube and Mixer (owned by Microsoft) also streamed the finals.
The previous day also saw two teenagers namely Emil “Nyhrox” Bergquist Pedersen and David “Aqua” W. walk off with $ 3 million . The pair eliminated 49 other teams to clinch the title (The money also wasn’t too bad).
The tournament had an astounding $ 30 million prize pool and took place on July 26 to 28 in New York at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
